ABOUT US
"Dedicated to Electrical and Electronic Engineering in South Africa since 1909"
Formed in 1909, the South African Institute of Electrical Engineers (SAIEE) has ±6000 members professionally engaged in various engineering activities, including academic research, manufacturing, electronics, telecommunications, measurement and control, mining, and power infrastructure services. Members make meaningful contributions to the quality of life in communities and the steady advancement of technology. Their efforts are acknowledged in many countries worldwide.
We strive to expand our professionalism and outreach in electrical engineering practices by hosting Continuing Professional Development (CPD) training courses offered through the SAIEE Training Academy, which offers various engineering courses in three different formats to expand knowledge across multiple engineering fields.
With assistance and leadership from and through our interest groups, sections, chapters, centres, committees and SAIEE council, we aim to continually improve our member value proposition and make maximum impact in the electrical and engineering practice.
We contribute to the common interests and welfare of the whole engineering fraternity through close cooperation with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA).

THE OFFICIAL OPENING OF SAIEE HOUSE
The South African Institute of Electrical Engineers (SAIEE) was proud to announce the official opening of its new head office building on 06 October 2011. The SAIEE is a learned society for professional engineering practitioners in Southern Africa and worldwide.
After nearly four years of deliberation and research on whether to move to newer parts of the metro surroundings or to stay in Observatory - in 2010, the decision was made to build a new facility on the current site. Forming part of the South African Agency of Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA) site, the enhanced facilities of the SAIEE add to the beauty and ambience of the ridge that gives a 360-degree endless view of Johannesburg from the highest point of the East-West Educational spine from Auckland Park to Bruma. This spine includes some of the country's best sports facilities.
The Minister of Science and Technology, Naledi Pandor, officially opened the prestigious new building that serves the needs of the SAIEE for many years and for the many years to come.
The SAIEE building houses the administrative and professional staff serving members and interacting with similar institutions throughout Southern Africa. The prestige and heritage of the previous 100 years of electrical engineers who helped build this country and voluntarily served this noble institution will be preserved and displayed in the Council Chamber. The cornerstone, laid on 30 March 2011, has embodied a time capsule to mark this milestone. When the head office is ever moved, or this new building is eventually demolished, the history items therein will be available for those fortunate to inherit it. Who knows when this will be?
Innes House originally was the residence of the Director of the Observatory and has served as the SAIEE head office since 1994. This heritage treasure has been restored, displays irreplaceable electrical engineering artefacts from the 19th century, and houses the SAIEE library. This building was officially named the Max Clarke Museum in 2022 in memory of the first SAIEE Historical Section Chairman. The museum continues to accept priceless electrical engineering artefacts from various donors for viewing within its display cabinets.
As one of the most strategic projects, the SAIEE has taken this bold step in faith and put a peg in the ground of history by building the head office. It will serve Southern Africa as it has in the past 100 years and also serve the members who appreciate the value of belonging to a professional society for their continuous professional development.
